Rose of Thorne review

When a drunk driver tragically orphans Skylar Rose at the age of sixteen, she leaves her dreams behind and takes on the daunting task of helping her elderly grandmother raise her young sister. While other girls her age were living a typical carefree life, she was picking up double shifts at a local cafĂ© and struggling to pay the bills.

Always putting her sister’s needs and school first, Skylar has never had time to date or develop relationships. Now a senior in college, she has her sights set on an amazing internship opportunity. The last thing she needed was for a sexy distraction like Sebastian Thorne to walk into her life.

Sebastian Thorne had been an entitled and reckless nineteen year old when he got behind the wheel of his new sports car that night. When his night of indulgence goes tragically wrong, Sebastian hesitantly turns to the one person, he knows can make everything go away…the one person he hates ..his father.

Now twenty-six, Sebastian is the young enigmatic and powerful CEO of his late father’s design company, Thorne Enterprises. With both millions in the bank and a new woman on his arm almost every night, the world never knew the dark secret he carried inside. Still plagued with nightmares from the night of that horrific accident and having to leave the beautiful girl behind, Sebastian vows to find the one that haunts his dreams. Sometimes the choice of revisiting our past opens the door to a future that we never thought possible.

Haunted by their past, these two want nothing more than to have their life given back to them. But what do you do when the person who gave you back your life, was the very one that took it from you in the first place?

* BOOK 2 THORNELESS will follow VERY VERY SOON!! Contains sexual content and abusive situations. Recommended for readers 18+ years.

4 Stars

I really, really enjoyed this debut novel by Mia Michelle. This book sucked me in from the very first page and I could not put it down until I had devoured the last word.

As far as the characters go, the author did an excellent job with them. I really liked Skylar. She gives up her dream in order to help raise her sister, Sophie, after they lose their parents. While raising her sister, she attends college and works part time at a restaurant, which helps them barely scrape by. The love and devotion of these two girls is heartwarming, and I really liked this aspect of the story. They take care of each other and give the other unlimited support. Although this is a romance story, the sisters’ relationship adds some depth to the story.

Sebastian. Troubled, guilty, Sebastian. Even though he was involved in Skylar’s tragedy, I still loved him. He knows he has “ruined” her life and made it difficult for her, but he is still drawn to her. He knows his secret will destroy her all over again, so he tries to keep her at arm’s length. However, the pull he has toward her is so magnetic and hard to ignore. He wants to atone for the wrong he has done and is so conflicted. You can’t help but feel for him.

While I really liked Sebastian, I liked Lucas even more. To be honest, I always root for the underdog, even though I KNOW they won’t get the girl. Or will he? Lucas is sweet, protective, romantic, and despite his former playboy ways, an all-around good guy. He definitely makes this good story even more interesting.

This isn’t just a love story. It’s about Skylar learning to live again after losing her parents. She has been going through the motions of life, but not living it. So many things are going on and happening to Skylar throughout the whole story, but it is so well written and woven together that it doesn’t feel like “too much.” There are several points of view in this story, not all from the main characters. Not once did I feel confused or like the story was jumping around. All the different views add so much to the story, that I wouldn’t have even realized it was missing. In my opinion, it takes a talented author to pull this off, and Mia Michelle did flawlessly.

This book is full of a little bit of everything from awesome characters, a great storyline, and a lot of emotion. It is a definite MUST READ!!!

I stare as Lucas wraps his hand in hers and leads her on through the restaurant. The waiter sits them in the far back secluded corner of the dining room. From where I am standing at the bar I can see her face clearly. The warm restaurant lights make her glow as she sat smiling from across the table at him. She looks at him shyly as he leans in to whisper something to her. I notice her delicate skin blush and then he takes her hand into his and gently kisses it.

Damn it! She is so damn beautiful!! Get your fucking paws off her, Lucas!

All I want to do is take her into my arms and kiss her senseless. I want to throw her over my shoulder and spend the entire night kissing every delectable perfect inch of her body. Her stunning face brightens as she begins laughing at something he says. The very thought of her being in Lucas’ bed later tonight sets me over the edge and I know I have to get the hell out there. The blonde looks at me confused as I grab my leather jacket so I grab her ass to indicate that I am ready to head back to my place.

Truthfully, I have lost my feel for her, but knowing that I can fuck some of my frustrations out with her has me grabbing her hand and pulling her out of the lounge.

As we make our way to the front door of the restaurant I brave one last glance towards Skylar’s table only to find her beautiful eyes upon mine. Her glance is full of hurt, pain and pure sadness. She quickly blinks and looks down then excuses herself from the table. I find myself wanting to run to her but I don’t. I have to get myself under control and fast.

I am Sebastian Thorne. Ruthless, arrogant Sebastian Thorne, heartless to the core.

He shrugs and rolls his eyes and before I think about what I’m doing, my hand connects with his face. Deacon grabs my wrist again, and I want to say sorry, but something is burning so hot inside me that I don’t feel sorry for hitting him. But I don’t feel better either.

He pulls my wrist hard enough for me to fall into his steel chest and his free hand grabs a handful of my hair. In an instant our lips collide and I fall apart. I slide my hands into his hair, and push myself against him. I feel him hard and ready on my stomach as his hands touch every part of my body he can reach. I moan against his lips as his hands slide up my dress and he grabs my behind. This is what I wanted, what I needed. Something coiled up inside the minute he brushed my hair earlier and all I need is to be released. I fumble with the belt on his trousers and make a reach for his zipper.

I wrote a poem when I was nine years old called 'Without You' and it was published in an anthology. That is where my writing journey began.
I bounced around between jobs and career ideas for a long time before I decided I wanted to take writing seriously. With nothing but college level qualifications and a mind full of inspiration, I sat at my desk and scribbled plan after plan onto A5 paper. In a few hours I had planned six novels including a trilogy. A full time mother to an energetic little boy, I thought writing and publishing was a long shot, and something I would keep in a drawer to read to myself, afraid to share what I had written.
But here I am, an independent author, full time mother and insomniac.
I write sexy contemporary romance with a twist. Most of my stories are every day occurrences, things often thought of as irrelevant, although they affect and consume peoples lives every day. I create strong characters, emotional story lines and journeys with no simple road to the desired destination. Life isn't about where you end up, it's about the paths you take to get there and the people and events you encounter on the way, and that is what I aim to show with my writing.
I have many more stories on the way, and I hope everyone who reads, enjoys them and is able to relate to them in one way or another.

3.5 Stars

The rating for this book was originally 4 Stars. I’m not sure what happened, but during the climax of the book, I just lost the connection I had with the characters.

I like a book with a strong female lead. At the beginning of the book, Victoria is just that. She’s confident, knows what she wants in life, and even lends strength to her friend, Sage, in her time of need. She was a really well rounded, solid character. However, in the middle of the book, when the conflict happens, her character falls apart. She becomes irrational and comes off as weak to me. She took her issues (if you can call them that) so far to the extreme that I found it a bit too much. She ran and was Stubborn instead of staying strong and sticking and fighting for what she wanted.

Then, we have Leland. Talk about hotness! He is a strong male lead. He’s confident, but not to the point of annoyingly cocky. We also don’t see him being a playboy, which I like because that seems like a pretty common theme when it comes to a successful, rich lead male. However, he seems to try too hard to please Victoria and make her forgive him. In my opinion, there wasn’t anything to forgive. Again, I feel like she made mt. Everest out of a tiny ant hill. I know we love when a man proves his love to his woman. We want him to move heaven and earth for her, but in this situation, I just felt like it was too much and uncalled for. I was actually hoping he would tell her to bug off, but of course this is a romance novel, and it wasn’t going to happen.

I think I just had a distaste for how Victoria handled the situation. As the story goes on, we see why she acted as she did and understand it a bit more. Yes, as a character I lost that connection to her, but by the end of the story I was back to liking her. I guess I had a bit of a rollercoaster relationship with Victoria.

As a whole, it was a good story and I really enjoyed the author’s writing style. I think my loss of connection in the book was a personal issue for me and my expectation for the character. I will definitely read book 2 in this series, a Sweet Affair, which is Sage and Connor’s story. I really enjoyed reading about the two in this story, so I am sure that I’ll like their book. This really is an enjoyable book and think that it is definitely worth the read.
