The last time I saw Declan St. James was at our rehearsal dinner. That was shortly before he jilted me at the altar. To avoid the swarm of whispers and finger pointing every time I dared to show my face in public, I fled two hours south to Atlanta and never looked back. Over the last decade, I’d planned hundreds of scenarios about how our next meeting would go down. The expletives I’d hurl at him. Which knee I might use to annihilate his balls. Which dimpled cheek on his ridiculously handsome face I would send a stinging slap across. But being elbow deep in a cow’s ass was not one of them. Normally, I didn’t get up close and personal to a bovine’s rectum. At least not since veterinarian school. But desperate times found me back home to attend my grandfather’s funeral, who happened to be the town’s large animal vet. Those two facts had left me wading through manure in Roy Wallace’s pasture to care for a distressed heifer. While time and maturity seemed to have changed him from the boy I knew, I still wasn’t falling for his charm. Or his hard, chiseled body. Or ass you could eat dinner off of. No, I wasn’t going back down that street again. Unfortunately, Declan didn’t seem to get the message. Instead, he seemed as stubborn as he ever was and ready for a fight. It’ll be the fight of his life for me to let him back in my heart. I was so excited to read Katie Ashley's newest release. It was two of my favorite tropes mashed together. We get a second chance romance along with enemies to lovers. Throw in a small town and this book has everything I love. Unfortunately, this book fell short. I wanted to love it, I really did.
Peyton Beasley had her heart broken ten years ago. Not just broken, obliterated. The love of her life and high school sweetheart, Declan St. James, stood her up on their wedding day. After leaving the small town of Hayesville she never returned. Peyton became a veterinarian and tried to move on. Only she never really did. Every relationship she would never really let herself get attached for fear of having her heart broken again. I liked Peyton but I will admit, at times she drove me crazy.
Declan St. James regrets what he did ten years ago but knew it had to be done. He knew that neither Peyton or himself were ready for marriage at the young age of 20. Now Peyton has come back to Hayesville and he knows he needs to set things right. I liked Declan. He was sweet and caring and even though he broke Peyton's heart in the most inexcusable way, I got why he did what he did.
Reining Her In is a sweet book with no angst and some hilarious moments. I read it quickly but I just couldn't connect with this book. The writing seemed different than what Katie has put out previously. I love all of her books and she is an instant one click author for me. Reining Her In seemed rushed and I just didn't love it. That's not to say you won't. Definitely give it a try, you may fall in love with this small town and it's characters.
