Review: The Affiliate by KA Linde

On the day of her Presenting, in front of the entire Byern Court, seventeen-year-old Cyrene Strohm's lifelong plans come to fruition when she's chosen as an Affiliate to the Queen.
Or so she thinks. When Cyrene receives a mysterious letter and an unreadable book, she finds nothing is as it seems. Thrust into a world of dangerous political intrigue and deadly magic, Cyrene's position only grows more treacherous when she finds herself drawn to the one man she can never have...
King Edric himself.
Cyrene must decide if love is truly worth the price of freedom. Find out in this first book in USA Today bestselling author K.A. Linde’s new Ascension series.

I think this book is a case of it was me and not the book. There were a few times I thought to myself, “Maybe I’m not smart enough for this book.” LOL! There was so many details and so many characters all with funky Fantasy names that at times I was lost.

That said, if you are a Fantasy YA reader this book will be for you. I had only read a few other in this genre so maybe that was where my disconnect came in.

Cyrene, our heroine, was granted the privilege to be The Affiliate to the Queen. However, the Queen hated Cyrene. Her husband the King and the Prince both took a huge interest in the seventeen year old girl. The immediate attraction between Cyrene and King Edric was strong and one the two struggled to resist. But Cyrene wanted more out of life than to be a mistress. She knew she deserved better.

The mystery was very intriguing. Cyrene’s sister gave her this old book as a present for her new position. However to everyone but Cyrene the pages are blank! Deaths are popping up all over the kingdom and the killer is on the loose. Cyrene is determined to figure out what her powers may be and what the book is all about.

The ending was a little cliffhanger that I was hoping packed a little more punch since this is KA Linde after all and she does love to keep us hanging on.

I am giving this one 4 stars because as much as I didn’t love it, I think a lot of other people would and I am interested in find out the secret behind the book. The writing was good, a bit wordy for me but I know that is part of the genre.

If you like Fantasy books, this is definitely for you!!!

Sins of Sevin by Penelope Ward

New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author

SINS OF SEVIN
(A standalone)

Release date 9/21/2015

A Contemporary Romance novel
Penelope Ward

What happens when the one you want is the only one you can't have?

My name is Sevin.

Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.

Elle was the girl who'd been carefully chosen for me.

After a long-distance courtship, I'd be moving into her family's guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.

Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.

I'd accepted those rules and my fate.

Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.

That was when restraint became a problem...especially since THE ONE wasn't Elle.

It was her sister, Evangeline.

You know what they say about best laid plans.

My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel.
Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language.
Only appropriate for adult readers
age 18+.

Wow!! I LOVED this book! I loved every single thing about it. Penelope Ward hit a home run with Sins of Sevin.  Sins of Sevin is full of the angst, hotness, and the forbidden love that Penelope is well known for. It will keep you glued to every single page and you won't be able to read fast enough.

Sins of Sevin is the story of Sevin and Evangeline. It is told from duel point of views and I liked that. I got to get inside both of their heads and connect with both of them.

Sevin was raised in a very religious family, yet he was as far from ultra religious as you could get. On the outside he was the perfect church boy but once you got to know him you realized he was so much more than that. Sevin is HOT. Between his chiselled abs and his smart mouth, he was everything you would want in a book boyfriend.

Evangeline was also raised in a very religious family. I loved how normal she was, given it was very frowned upon for her to be that way. She would push the limits just far enough to stretch them, but not break them.

Elle is Evangeline's sister. She was chosen to be courted by Sevin. Elle is the perfect, sweet, Christian girl. She abides by all rules and can't wait to be a wife and mother. I felt bad for Elle at times because she really was clueless as to what was going on around her.

The courting process is best described as Duggar-esk. Everyone is familiar with that family and how it works. There were times that I had to remind myself that this book is set in present day because I kept picturing a mixture of Duggar/Amish.

I loved the push and pull that was Sevin and Evangeline's relationship. My heart hurt for both of them. Ward does a great job of sucking you in and holding on. You can't turn the pages fast enough because you HAVE to know what is going to happen. I LOVED the twist that she throws at you. I never saw it coming. I enjoyed watching it play out. This is the story that once you finish you keep pressing your kindle wanting to turn the page. You don't want the story to end.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It gives you all the feels you could ask for and it flows beautifully. I hope that she writes more forbidden romance stories because every single one she has written have been five stars.

He quietly followed me into the dining room, carrying the flatware. The tension in the air was thick as he walked behind me around the oval table, setting down silverware after each plate I’d put down. It was like some weird game of musical chairs where awkward silence replaced the music. The hairs on my back stiffened. We weren’t saying anything, but it was as if I could feel the weight of a thousand words along with the heat of his body so close behind me.
When I noticed he’d just put a fork where the spoon was supposed to go, I switched it. “The forks go on this side, actually.” My hand was shaking. I couldn’t believe how little control I had over myself.
Noticing my nerves, he suddenly placed his hand over mine and whispered, “Stop.”
Chills ran through me. My heart started to beat faster. My nipples hardened. I hated my body for responding to him with equal amounts of fear and lust.
I turned to him, his hand still over my knuckles. It felt like I couldn’t breathe as he just looked at me.
My mother’s footsteps caused Sevin to move his hand off mine with lightning speed.
Mama entered, and we continued setting the table as if our stolen moment hadn’t happened.

Cover Reveal: The Play by Karina Halle

A troubled Scottish rugby player who doesn't play by the rules.
A vivacious man-eater who's given up on love.
When it comes to Lachlan and Kayla, opposites don't just attract - they explode.

Kayla Moore has always been comfortable with her feisty, maneating reputation. At least it was fine until she hit her thirties and saw her best friends Stephanie and Nicola settle down with Linden and Bram McGregor, leaving Kayla to be the odd one out. Tired of being the third wheel with nothing but one-night stands and dead-end dates in San Francisco, Kayla decides to take a vow of celibacy and put men on the backburner.

That is until she lays her eyes on Linden and Bram’s cousin, hot Scot Lachlan McGregor. Lachlan is her sexual fantasy come to life – tall, tatted, and built like a Mack truck. With a steely gaze and successful rugby career back in Edinburgh, he’s the kind of man that makes her want to throw her vow right out the window. But Lachlan’s quiet and intense demeanor makes him a hard man to get to know, let alone get close to.

It isn’t until the two of them are thrown together one long, unforgettable night that Kayla realizes there is so much more to this brooding macho man than what meets the eye. But even with sparks flying between the two, Lachlan can’t stay in America forever. Now, Kayla has to decide whether to uproot her whole life and chance it all on someone she barely knows or risk getting burned once again.
Sometimes love is a game that just needs to be played.
