Blog Tour: Courage and Other Demons by Jill Daugherty

“It occurred to me as I stared into the darkness that it was probably a good thing it had taken so long for me to see Simon for who he truly was. If I hadn’t fallen in love with that sweet and kind boy, I wouldn’t have gotten on a plane with him to fly halfway across the world; I wouldn’t have trusted him enough to do what he was asking me to do. And as angry as I was, as much as I hated what my life had become, I knew I had to do what Simon and the others were asking me to do. It all came down to one inescapable belief. I would have to kill or be killed. There were certainly other pieces of the puzzle that were more complex and harder to understand, but that one piece was very clear and unrelenting and it drove me forward, even in those moments when giving up seemed like the most sensible choice I could make.”

The end of the world will start in the suburbs of Denver with a faery transfer student from Ireland. If you think that’s totally ridiculous, then you understand how Maggie O’Neill feels. In all of her sixteen years, faeries were something you read about in children’s books. They didn’t actually show up on your doorstep. They didn’t kiss you and make your knees go weak and whisper sweet nothings in your ear. Until Simon Brady, that is. Simon changed everything. He makes her heart race and her skin burn with excitement, but he has also changed her core beliefs about the world and made her see it as a dark and dangerous place filled with monsters that belong only in the lines of faery tales. There is no doubt in Maggie’s mind that she loves Simon, but can she see past who he is and find a place for him in her heart?

This story starts out ordinary. Maggie is an ordinary high school student. She has a popular boyfriend, who she is not sure about, an awesome best friend, and a supportive family (and sometimes annoying little brother.) The one thing that puts a hiccup in Maggie's life is Simon. She has an undeniable attraction to him and the more she gets to know him, the more she likes him.

There is just "something" missing, "something" she doesn't feel for her boyfriend. When something happens to sever the loose tie she has to him, Simon is there for her. They start as friends, but it quickly develops into more. Simon has loved Maggie since the first time he saw her. However, there is more at work than mutual attraction and affection. Call it fate or destiny, but these two are meant for each other and Simon already knows.

But Simon isn't who he seems. He isn't a normal high school guy, falling in love with a girl. Simon is a faery and he regrettably has to pull Maggie in to his world so that she can fulfill her destiny. Now Maggie is a bit leery of who to trust, even Simon. She knows she loves him, but she is angry and bitter. She has to find courage in herself and trust in Simon and the rest of the faeries before it is too late.

I really enjoyed this story. The author delivered a well thought out, solid story line. She slowly eases the reader into the world of the faeries. Maggie isn't suddenly dropped in. Since we experience her "normal" life, you can feel her longing for it when it is no longer hers. We are able to better experience her fear for her family and her sadness over her loss of her friends and old life.

The characters were all pretty awesome as well. I really grew attached to a lot of the characters. I was involved. I cared. To me, that is what makes a story awesome. I can't wait until the next book in this series comes out. No, it isn't a cliffhanger per se, but Maggie and Simon's story is far from over. I am excited to see what their next adventure entails.

Review: Soul of Flame by Rebecca Ethington

The Time for the final battle has come.
Edmund's armies have surrounded the Rioseco Abbey, trapping the few survivors inside. The sight that Ilyan was given a thousand years ago is about to come to pass.

If only Joclyn was able to fight.

Joclyn is tormented by the hallucinations that Cail’s mind has left her with, her magic an uncontrollable torrent that even Ilyan cannot control. Her moments of lucidity are broken by fears of dripping pipes and bleeding walls, and a desire to kill Ryland that she is having trouble trying to ignore.

The sight has shown her power, shown her success, but it has also shown her death – The end of her life something she is not quite willing to give up on yet.

Even past her death, the sight has shown her love, and that love may be the only key to her sanity, to her strength, and to Edmund's death.
That love may stand in her way, and a single choice may tip the scales and secure their future, or destroy their fate.

The Imdalind series keeps getting better and better. This is a series that I can read over and over again and not get bored. You MUST read this series in order, otherwise you will be lost. If you haven’t read the first 3 books, you will want to stop reading this review. It will contain spoilers to them.

The author again pulls us into the magical world of Jos, Ilyan, Ryland, and the whole cast of wonderful characters as they plot how to save the world from Edmund. Jos has just been pulled from Cail’s mind in this book. She is broken, afraid, and plagued by hallucinations. This is her story of healing. She begins to really believe in herself and her abilities. She really grew as a character and I loved her journey.

This is also her and Ilyan’s love story. Yes, she has been falling in love with him during the previous books, and he has always loved her, but this is the story where she really embraces that love. Like all relationships, theirs isn’t full of flowers and sunshine. They have issues that they need to overcome, not to mention the upcoming battle and her death. Like all great couple, they stick together and know that they can face what lies ahead as long as they have each other.

In this book, we also get a better understanding of Ryland. I won’t lie; I have a soft spot for him. I fell in love with him in Kiss of Fire, and my heart hasn’t yet let him go. I hate that Edmund tore his soul apart. My heart breaks for him. I want him to become fully healed and whole so he won’t be insane and try to kill Jos every time he sees her. He was such a great guy and I believe that he still has it in him. I was thrilled to see some moments of his old self in this book.

I was introduced to Rebecca Ethington’s writing with her debut novel, Kiss of Fire. From there, she has grown and matured into an exceptional writer. Her use of imagery is outstanding. I can picture everything she describes so clearly. She also knows how to coax out all of your emotions and really get you invested in her stories. Rebecca is definitely one of my favorite authors, and I will willingly devour each and every story she has to tell.

Rebecca Ethington has been telling stories since she was small. First, with writing crude scripts, and then on stage with years of theatrical performances. The Imdalind Series is her first stint into the world of literary writing. Rebecca is a mother to two, and wife to her best friend of 14 years. She was born and raised in the mountains of Salt Lake City, and hasn’t found the desire to leave yet. Her days are spent writing, running, and enjoying life with her amazing family.

Blog Tour: Death of the Mad Hatter by Sarah J. Pepper

If the king loses his head, then the Queen with a Bleeding Heart would rule the Red Court until Time ceased to move forward. When a second carried on for infinity, every creature in Wonderland would tip their Hat to the misfit girl with a Boy’s name (or was it a boy with a Girl’s name?) who’d end the Reign of Terror. However, it all hinged on the One-Eyed Hare being able to convince an uninspirable Heir that the impossible was indeed possible—like stopping time—and that Love was worth a Beheading.

Heads would Roll…

Hearts would Break…

In the end, would it matter who Reigned?

I’m going to start off by saying that this book isn’t normally something that I would read. However, I was intrigued by the synopsis. I’m actually glad that I read this book. This is Alice in Wonderland gone totally dark. There were many twists and turns and I honestly did not know where the author was going to take this story.

There are several prophecies that the characters, Alice and Ryley, play a part in. Only, Ryley has no clue about Wonderland or his role in said prophecies. Ryley is just a normal high school guy. He plays baseball and chases girls. He is really smart, which I liked, and plans to use his baseball skill to pursue his real dream, Physics. Alice is quite the character. She isn’t the sweet innocent girl like in the Disney movie. She is dark, twisted, and haunted. She is still full of mischief, but it is a deceitful mischief.

I really enjoyed this dark take on Wonderland. There really isn’t too much I can say without telling the story, and I feel you need to read it yourself to get the impact of it. The author has a vivid imagination, and she pulls you right into her story. She is able to describe scenes and senses to make you feel like you are there. She is truly an AWESOME storyteller. I will definitely be reading more works by Sarah J. Pepper.

“Words escape me in the presence of your beauty.”

She pretended to be mad. She even put her hands on her hips and scowled, which made her more attractive. There was no denying Alice Mae’s magnificence. She could compete with models in natural beauty, but it wouldn’t be a competition when considering her quirky personality. She wasn’t definable. She was complicated. She had so many different levels, uncharted territory, to her. She was a mystery, and I wanted to spend all eternity trying to solve her, if I wasn’t fighting with her.

Obviously I couldn’t say that. No one ever wants something (or someone) if it’s too easy to take. So I added, “You’re even more attractive when you pout.”

“I’m not pouting,” she insisted, even though her bottom lip stuck out enough for me to struggle to keep my thoughts straight.

“Then tell me what word you’d use to describe what you’re doing to me,” I said, stepping closer to the only girl in the world who could pull off wearing a combination wrestler’s and football player’s uniform and be so damn provocative.

“I’m just being playful.” The look in her eyes was anything but innocent.

“Playful?” I closed the distance between us. “I think you need to check out a thesaurus from the library because playful isn’t the word I’d use.”

I pressed my finger against her shoulder pads. I traced my finger down until it fell off the pads. The spandex wrestling uniform accentuated the perfect formed lines of her stomach. I let my finger drift lower until I traced her hip that protruded slightly.
“What word would you use?”

Inviting.” I lifted her chin. I bent forward so my nose traced her cheek. “You are being rather inviting.” With my other hand, I tugged on the thin spandex that covered her stomach. “And I want to accept your invitation.”

“Ryley, I’m not the kind of a girl who just sends out all sorts of invitations without...”

“You’re not the kind of girl who falls in love?”

She pulled away. “It would be tragic if I fell in love.”

I let my hands fall by my side. “Would it be tragic to fall in love, period—or just with me?”

I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn't only filled with hugs, kisses, unicorns, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn't always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn't mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?
