That Second Chance EXCERPT REVEAL by Meghan Quinn

ThatSecondChance_FBPage-comingsoonbanner

I’m counting out our register drawer, trying to stay focused on the numbers whipping through my head, but it’s difficult with Reid’s constant small talk. I jot down another tally mark on the paper in front of me and set aside a stack of bills.   “Hello, are you listening?” Reid asks, sounding annoyed.   “No. I’m counting.”   “Well, I’m talking about you, so you might want to lend me your ear for a second.”   Huffing, I set the cash on the counter, knowing my very persistent brother won’t be quiet until I give him my full attention. “What’s up, Reid?”   Satisfied, he smiles. “You should ask her out.”   “Ask who out?”   “Ren.”   Yeah, that’s not going to happen. “No.”   I go back to counting, but Reid starts snapping his fingers at me. “Hey, I wasn’t finished.” I look back up at him, not even slightly interested in this conversation. “I saw the way she was looking at you today. I think she likes you.”   “You’re confused. She was probably just being nice, since I’m the guy who pulled her out of the window of her car after her accident. And even if she does like me, which I highly doubt, there’s no interest on my end. So that’s the end of that.”   “Bull,” Reid and Jen both say at the same time.   Christ. My two most nagging siblings are ganging up on me. Just what I need when I’m trying to get home and relax.   “Can we not make this into a dissection of my personal life, please? I’m not in the mood, and I want to get this done so I can go home.”   “Griff, she’s pretty, she’s sweet, and she’s smart. She’s new to town and, I’m sure, could use a friend,” Jen says just as the door opens, its bell chiming through the space. Brig pops in, grease all over his shirt and a smirk on his face.   Uh-oh. There’s only one reason why he’d be smirking at me that way.   “What are we talking about?” He rubs his hands together and takes a seat on a barstool near the window. “If it’s about the hot new teacher in town, I want in on this conversation.”   “We’re trying to convince Griff to ask her out.”   Brig slow claps his appreciation. “Novel idea. I think they’re a perfect match.”   “I’m not asking her out,” I huff, giving up on the register and leaning against the wall behind me, arms crossed. There’s no way I’ll be able to concentrate on counting while these three are yapping in my ear.   “Why the hell not? She’s perfect for you,” Brig says, a little insulted at my rejection. “Before you even say no, you should at least get to know her a little. I told her today she could borrow your truck while her car is in the shop.”   I count to five before answering, tamping down my temper. “Why the hell would you do that?” Okay, maybe I didn’t tamp it down enough.   “Uh, because she lives three houses down from you?” Brig rolls his eyes as if I’m the stupid one in this conversation. “She needs some help, so be a knight in shining armor, dude. Help out the damsel in distress and then make out with her on the beach. Maybe cop a feel; get some for once.”   “I’m not doing that,” I answer, going back to the money, letting them know this conversation is over.   “And why not?” Jen asks.   “Because I’m not interested in starting or being in a relationship. I’m happy with how my life is right now, and I don’t need anything complicating it.”   “But she has heart eyes for you,” Brig says like a jackass.   “Don’t worry; there are plenty of Knightly brothers to choose from,” I reply.   “Come on, Griff, how fun can going home to an empty, lonely house really be?” Jen chimes in, concern evident in her voice.   I shift on my feet, my voice terse. “I like my house. It’s fine. I’m fine.”   Silence falls between us, an awkward air moving in like a fast-moving cold front.   “Is this because of New Orleans?” Reid finally asks, taking a seat next to Brig. Both of my brothers fix their gazes on me, waiting for an answer.   Why is this a thing whenever we talk about my love life? Can’t they just let it go? What happened was … hell, I don’t even know how to describe it. All I know is I don’t foresee love in my future.   Claire was the love of my life, and I lost her; in a blink of an eye she was gone. I’m not going through that again. Not ever.   Shaking my head, I turn away from my family. This conversation is over.   And with that, I take the cash to the back office, where I can get some peace and quiet.   Ask Ren Winters out on a date? Not going to happen.   And she’s not going to drive my truck either. I think that’s evident in the fact that she drove her car in between two trees.   Can’t blame a guy there.

Just My Type by Tara Sivec

Live in the best small town in the world? Check.
Have the greatest job ever working on my family's pumpkin farm? Check.
Marry the town pharmacist and have a nice, quiet life with our son? Check-check.

"Oh, I'm sorry. Did you say you were happy? LOLOLOLOL!" ~ Life

Ember Hastings never thought she'd be dragged away from White Timber and everything she loved, thrust in the middle of a big city she hated, or have her husband of nine years say, "I can't do this anymore," all within the span of three months, yet here she is.

She misses her family, she misses the farm, and she misses having a backbone and caring whether or not the stain on her shirt is chocolate or shit. She works from home doing transcription. Does she really need to shower or leave the house?

Baker Matthews has been bringing everyone down lately with his grouchy attitude. His job is stressful and sometimes depressing, but he wouldn't change anything about it. When a glitch with the transcription company he's using mistakenly sends him notes he wasn't supposed to see, Baker finds himself laughing out loud for the first time in months.

He's never met a woman who says whatever she's thinking and doesn't fawn all over him when she finds out what he does for a living. Until Ember Hastings comes barreling into his life, calling him Shit Mouth and asking if he has any balls.

But she wants to keep this professional. She made him pinky swear, and you don't mess around with pinky swears. Baker will have to get creative if he wants to prove to Ember that he's just her type.

Y'all. THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING!! I absolutely adored it. Just My Type is laugh out loud hilarious with the perfect amount of swooning. This book is signature Tara Sivec humor. It brought me back to the Seduction and Snacks type of humor that Tara is so known for.

Just My Type is a standalone. It can be read without reading the companion novel. I though, highly recommend reading The Simple Life first. Otherwise there will be spoilers in Just My Type. Plus, The Simple Life is amazing and everyone should read it.

Ember is a wife and mom, living in a huge new city and she's trying everything she can to just make it work. To survive, day after day. Until everything falls apart. Now she's a single mom with an asshole ex husband, stuck in a city she despises.  Just My Type ebbs and flows perfectly as we see Ember take back her life and learn to live again. Throw in the super hot Baker Matthews, lots of laughs, a hedgehog, and you've got yourself a five star read that you won't be able to put down. I laughed throughout this entire book and finished with the cheesiest grin. You too will be rooting for them to "turn the page". Just My Type is perfect and it's a must one click. Do it for Ron Jeremy, you won't regret it.

“Well, I’m good and truly fucked.”
“If you can say the F-word all the time, I can say penis whenever I want,” Lincoln announces
as I look up from my phone to find him standing in front of me with his backpack on and his
teeth freshly brushed.
“Okay, fine.” I shrug, grabbing my keys from the counter and choosing to deal with this
problem right now instead of the Shit Mouth one. “But since I’m the adult, I’ll test it out first,
okay there, penis? Did you pack your penis in your backpack? Did you study for your penis
test?”
“Moooom,” Lincoln whines as I usher him out the front door.
“What’s wrong, penis? I thought we were cool with penis,” I say as we get into my car and
buckle up. “Turn on the penis and find a good song. I bet it will be a song about pe—”
“Okay!” Lincoln finally shouts with a laugh. “It’s not cool when you say it. It’s kind of gross.
I won’t say it all the time anymore.”
Well, I’m not going to win Mother of the Year anytime soon, but that’s one problem solved.
We spend the rest of the car ride to school coming up with names for the dog I’m caving on
more and more each day, none of which have anything to do with the male anatomy, thankfully.
It’s not until I’ve dropped my car off at home and headed back out on foot for my Monday
morning coffee ritual that I start worrying about problem number two.
“Jesus, just read the email, Ember. What’s the worst it could say?” I mutter to myself as I
lock up my front door and walk down the porch to the sidewalk, my cell phone practically
burning a hole in my back pocket with that unread email waiting for me.
I called the client Shit Mouth. I accused him of not having any balls. And steroid use, just
because he owns a gym. He’s going to rip me a new asshole.
“It’s not like this was my fault. He never should have seen my notes. I did nothing wrong,” I
mutter to myself again as I reach into my back pocket and pull my phone out when I get to the
end of my front walkway and turn right.
You did so much wrong. He’s going to murder you. He has your email address now. He
could hire himself a hacker and find out where you live. I really need to stop watching Dateline.
Before I can give myself any more time to freak out, I quickly open the email as I walk and
hold my breath, wondering if he’ll just call me a bitch, or go right for the kill and whip out the
old C U Next Tuesday. Honestly, for a guy who owns a gym and “looks like he works out,” he
better bring the big guns, or I will have lost all faith in ’roid rage.
Dammit, Ember! That’s what got you into this mess in the first place.
My breath leaves me in a whoosh, and I come to a stop in the middle of the sidewalk when I
read the email. And read it again. And one more time, just to make sure I’m not seeing things.

Subject: Shit Mouth Transcription
She twirls her hair around her finger every fucking time she laughs.
I said purple, clear as day. Get the shit out your ear.
My balls are where they always are. Slung over my shoulder, because they’re too
big to carry. (GIGGLES)
I have never, nor will I ever, use steroids. Drugs are bad. Needles are scary. Shut
up. Big, manly men can have fears too, GOD.

She is definitely not a professional interviewer. Does Dan Rather drop his pen
every fifteen minutes so he can bend over and show people his cleavage? More
importantly, does Dan Rather have cleavage?
But seriously, DO I sound like I have shit in my mouth? I feel like you’re lying.
Not Necessarily Shit Mouth, a.k.a. Baker

My new boss has it all. In spades. Gorgeous green eyes? Check. Hard-and-sexy body? Check. Intelligence? Check. Success? A big fat billionaire… Check.
Too bad I haven’t started out on the best foot.
My big mouth has already turned him against me, and tempting good looks and success aside, Trent Turner is no peach either. He’s stubborn and thick-headed, and son of a fruitcake, he thinks he knows everything there is to know about the hotel business.
With him running the development of the new Vanderturn New Orleans Hotel and me doing the design, our work relationship is far too intimate for two people who absolutely despise one another.
But that’s not all.
See, he isn’t just my billionaire boss from hell. He’s my new neighbor, too.
Same city. Same building. Same floor.
Trent Turner is my billionaire boss next door.
Holy moly, let’s hope my career—and hormones—can survive.

Bitter Rival by J. Sterling

BitterRival_FrontCover_LoRes.jpg

Our families have been at war for generations; a bitter rivalry with no end in sight. All I've ever wanted to do was make wine, but one night with James will cost me everything.

I shouldn't be attracted to him... but I am.

I definitely shouldn't want to sleep with him... but I do.

Is following my heart worth the risk of losing my vineyard and my legacy?

Because in my family, there could be no greater betrayal than sleeping with the enemy.

James Russo and Julia La Bella grew up enemies over a family rivalry that dates back to their great grandfathers. They both have a thing for each other but neither has acted on it due to their father’s strong hatred for each other.  James and Julia both work for their families wineries and compete against each other at tasting events.  Oh, let’s not forget to mention their families are next door neighbors!  How can these two ever stop the family feud when their fathers can fight every day from their front porches?! If you’re looking for a fun, sweet, flirty, quick enemies to lover’s story pick up this book!  Jenn’s writing flows smoothly and she gives you the right amounts of everything.

I was so excited when I found out that we were getting a new book from J. Sterling. I'm a huge fan of her work and couldn't wait to dive into Bitter Rival. Enemies to Lovers is one of my favorite troupes. The thing with this one though is, are James and Julia really enemies? Or is it just their families that are the enemies?

I loved both Julia and James in this book. Now grown, they both help run their respective family  wineries. Competitive in nature, they are always trying to top the other at the wine tasting events. There's a twist though, both have been raised to hate the other. The family feud is still alive and well, generations later. What started this feud? Throughout the book I kept trying to figure out what really happened. It added a layer that I really enjoyed.

So what happens when you're supposed to hate some but you're really attracted to them too? Do you do as your family insists or do you stand strong and go for what you really want? Jenn brings a great novel that will make you laugh, swoon, and keep you hooked until the very last page. Bitter Rival is a sweet, quick read and one that shouldn't be missed. I recommend grabbing a glass of your favorite wine and diving right in.
