Blog Tour Review: The Last Round by Emmy L. Montes

TLR Release Blitz Banner

Happy Release Day to Emmy L. Montes and The Last Round #fightforlove

the last round

In the ring, I’m trained, powerful, and in control.
And that’s exactly how I built my legacy.
For years I’ve trained to fight, but no championship title in the world has prepared me for the most important fight of my life.
Out of the ring, I’m untamed and reckless.
Which is why my wife of nine years has filed for divorce.
I’m done with living up to the bad boy image my middleweight titles come with. Boxing is my life, but the money and the fame mean nothing to me without her by my side.
This fight is for the woman that I love.
And I can’t lose.
I won’t lose.

The Last Round Teaser4

I love that Emmy Montes decided to take a step outside the “norm” and gave us a story about an already married couple. Often times we seeing the dating and the trials couples go through but never married couples.

Julian is a champion boxer, Natalia a buddy actress and their marriage is on the rocks. The story is about Julian fighting for what he lost. To me, this story had the potential to be a real knock out but something about it fell short. If I had to put my finger on it, I’d say it was too short. I needed more back story, I need more story about when they were apart and I would have loved to see more story in the end.

Ms Montes’ writing was beautiful as always and the idea was great. In her other books, I felt the love of the couple deep in my bones, it flew off the pages but this one just missed the mark. That being said I would love to see more of this couple. Oh a prequel so we can see how Julian and Natalia came to be. How strong their love was that made their breakup so gut wrenching and why Natalia stayed for so long when things were bad.

All in all this book was just okay for me but I love Emmy Montes and I can’t wait to see what story she crafts next.

EL Montes
USA Today Bestselling Author, E.L. Montes (Emmy Luz Montes) lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, Alex, and their English Bulldog name Butters. She has a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies.
Ms. Montes worked several years as a paralegal for a mid-size law firm. She had always loved the legal field and found it to be interesting. She more so "secretly" loved to write. Disastrous was her debut novel which was released October 2012. After the release of her second novel Ms. Montes took a huge leap, by leaving her fulltime job to focus on her writing career. She has and continues to write characters with flaws. Ms. Montes said, “No one is perfect and neither are my characters. It makes the storyline a bit more realistic, in my opinion. But I also feel no matter who you are or the life you have lived, everyone deserves someone to love and be loved. I’m a hopeless romantic, and enjoy writing a story where my readers feel like they’re living and feeling every emotion.”

Lucy has always been a good girl. The most hardcore thing she's done in her life was falling for a divorced man ten years her senior.

But he was the love of her life and she married him. When her Peter Pan of a husband decided to divorce her, she thought it was her chance to start anew. That was until she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Besides looking like Britney circa 2007, she is taking it well, real well. You might see her walk around the hospital during chemo sessions with bright colored wigs and outrageous t-shirts that seem to shock the most conservative employees. One of them reads F U CANCER.

I should have suspected something. Instead, when the doorbell rang, I opened the door without the slightest idea of what was waiting for me.

Beverly showed up on my doorstep along with the man I had tried to keep away all week.

“Shit,” I said. “What now?”

Brandon smiled, but looked sheepish, which made me worry. He was holding a bouquet of roses, and handed it to me without saying a word. I took it and thanked him, and when I locked eyes with his, I felt a million different feelings unleash inside of me.

He was giving me that hooded, cautious look. His eyes looked a deeper blue than usual. My eyes fell on his mouth and I realized how much I had missed his touch.

I wanted to jump into his arms, but there was still doubt in my heart and it was weighing the happy-go-lucky part of me down.

“Okay, so…as you might have guessed by now, you and I aren’t going anywhere,” Beverly spoke. “But you and Brandon are going on a little adventure–”

“What?” I turned to her snapping out of my Brandon-induced daydream.

“Yes! And you have to leave, like…right now. So, chop-chop!”

I looked at Brandon quizzically. “What do you have to say? Cat got your tongue?” I joked.

“I want you to come with me. I don’t want to have to persuade you. I’m also afraid I’m going to spill the beans and ruin the whole thing,” he said.

“You seem pretty good at keeping things to yourself,” I sneered.

“Alright! Easy, woman! Come on, time to go!” She came behind me and started pushing me towards Brandon’s car.

“Okay, okay!” I took my purse, locked the house and unwillingly walked to the car, all with the flowers in my arms. “Crap! I forgot about the flowers. I turned to Beverly. “You have the keys to my house, right? Would you mind putting them in a vase?”

“I’ll do it,” she replied.

“But first, there’s something else I have to do.” She exchanged a look with Brandon and I stared confused at the two of them.

She got a strip of black fabric out of her purse. What the hell was that?

“Turn around,” she commanded.

“Turn around. I have to put this blindfold on you.”

“Seriously?” I gasped. How could these two people be those I used to think I trusted? “Am I not coming willingly?” I asked Brandon.

“This is her idea,” he replied, tilting his head in Beverly’s direction.

Of course. I should have known. Miss lover of kinky steamy romance novels.

“Well, it’s not necessary,” I argued.

“It totally is,” Beverly rebuffed. “It’s going to ruin the whole surprise. Wear the motherfucking blindfold or so help me God, Lucy.”

“Okay, okay.” Jeez. Who knew she could be such a Bossypants? “You’re making me reconsider our friendship, you know,” I told her.

“Lies,” she said, tying the knot behind my head. “All done!” she exclaimed and then pinched my butt.

“Awww, stop it, you sissy. Give me these.” She took the flowers from my arms. Brandon took my hand and just the feeling of his warm fingers around mine, made my heart jump a little. I exhaled.

“I promise you, this is going to be good,” he whispered in my ear. God, his voice sounded even sexier than I remembered.

He helped me in the car and put the seatbelt around me. His lips brushed against mine just for a second, and I gasped.

“I have to admit, I do like this blindfold,” he teased.

“Of course you do.”

“I almost forgot,” Beverly said. She took my hand and placed some lightweight object in my hand. It was shaped like a square and it was made of paper.

“What is it?”

“A CD mix. A little ‘sorry for blindfolding you, friend, have a great time on your mystery road trip’ playlist.”

“Road trip?” I asked.

“Oops, I said too much. Anyway, I’m sure you’re going to hate me a little less after you listen to it.”

“If you say so.”

“Have a fabulous night and don’t forget to tell your best friend she’s the best when you end up having a great time.”

“We’ll see about that,” I joked and smiled, but I wondered if she knew I was joking. I couldn’t see her and wasn’t sure if she was smiling.

“Bye, Lucy. I wuv you!”

“Wuv you too!”

She closed the door, and a moment later I heard Brandon’s door open and he sat in the passenger seat. He closed his door and started the car.

“Where are we going?” I asked him.

“You’ll see.”

“Well, at the moment, I can’t see anything.” He laughed. It was a warm, rich sound that eased up the nervousness and made me smile.

“I missed your smile,” he said. “I can’t believe you had the strength to stay away from me a whole week.”

“Eight days,” I corrected him.

“Were you going to keep giving me the cold shoulder if I hadn’t showed up at your door?”

“I don’t know.” I heard him exhale a deep breath and wondered if that hurt his feelings. It was easier to be indifferent to him when he wasn’t around. Now, in the small space of the car, my head swam in his scent, his words made my heartbeat speed up, and a warm and fuzzy feeling spread into my chest. The knots in my stomach dissolved and the words almost come rushing out of my mouth.

“I missed you too.”

“Good,” he said.

Release Blutz: Catalyst be Leighton Riley

Title: Catalyst
Author: Leighton Riley
Release Date: Dec 28, 2015
Find on Goodreads
For every action, there is a reaction.

People aren’t always who they say they are. Everyone has their secrets. Some are more evil than I ever thought imaginable.

I was left broken and alone after my boyfriend was murdered in my bar.

An old acquaintance moves into Liam’s home and a spark is ignited deep inside me.

Becoming vulnerable made me weak, and I never saw it coming.

When obsession takes over, lies and deceit can be killer.

I started this book without knowing much about it. I got a short blurb, but that is it. The author and title were a mystery to me. I honestly had no idea what I was getting into. What started out as a read that I thought would be 5 Hearts quickly spiraled down to 3 Hearts.

This story begins with Tinsley mourning the loss of her boyfriend, Liam, who was murdered in a bar that she owns. It has been months, and she (of course) has trouble moving on. He was the one for her. They were planning a future together, but life didn't work out that way. Her best friend, Noah, is there every step of the way to help pick her up and function. She keeps running into an old acquaintance from college named Maguire. He makes her feel again and makes her want to try to move on.

Like I said, this book started off strong. It sucked me in with lots of emotion and relatable characters. Even though Tinsley was grieving, this book was full of witty dialogue. Then, somewhere about a third of the way through, it started the downward slide (for me). The story got jumpy. We would be in one scene with something going on, and then, it felt like a cutscene and something totally different would be happening. In all fairness, I think that maybe the author did this on purpose. It does tie in with the story, but I found it disorientating.

Then, there was just too much happening. I kept thinking, "What now!?" There was way too much going on and the resolutions the author offered felt too quick and simple. Then, we are thrown for a total loop and I felt Tinsley was way too forgiving and accepting of what happened. However, the author did write consistently well. The story flowed and the dialogue was easy and fun. I think if the author could have expanded on something instead of making it so quick it would have been a bit more believable.

Watching movers pack away his things and throw them into the truck is so impersonal. Tossing the boxes into a truck with no thought as to what they are handling. I wish I had the strength to be the one who packed it all away, but I couldn’t. It was hard enough to pack up my things. I moved my stuff out of the home two weeks ago, but the majority of everything in that home was his.
He was my other half. My soul mate. One morning, we were completely in love and talking about starting a family, and then by nightfall, I had found my boyfriend barely alive in the storage room of the bar I owned. I rode with him as he was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, praying he would pull through even though the look on the paramedics’ faces told me otherwise. After what seemed like forever in the waiting room, doctors gave me the news he didn’t make it. The police questioned me extensively, and later that night, I came home to his empty house. From that day on, I have been on autopilot.
Leighton Riley resides in Dallas, Tx and works in real estate for her day job. She writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense. Sinfully, Regretfully, and Deceitfully can be read in order or as standalones. Sinfully and Regretfully take place around the same time frame and can even be read in reverse order (will give more background on Payton and Ryder's story). Tate's story, Deceitfully, finishes off the series. She's also the author of the romantic suspense novel, Catalyst.

Title: When We Fall (Take the Fall #2)
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: Decemeber 8, 2015

The last time Piper Ross saw her best friend’s sexy older brother, Jase Simmons, he was being taken away in handcuffs. Seven years later, two things haven’t changed: Piper is still head-over-heels in love with him . . . and Forrestville’s chief of police—Piper’s dad—still hates his guts. So when Piper sees a chance to get close to Jase, she makes her move—literally. As his new roommate, and as the office manager of his tattoo shop, Piper won’t be satisfied until Jase knows that she wants to be his.

The quintessential good girl, Piper is pure temptation for Jase. The only reason he’s always kept his distance is because she’s the last person he’d ever want to hurt. But once he realizes that Piper is ready to take the leap, everything just makes sense. Suddenly Jase feels like a new man—until nasty rumors start swirling and Piper’s heartless father stirs up even more trouble. Now Jase must convince Piper that she wasn’t wrong about him . . . because falling in love never felt so right.

OMG. This book. It pulled me in from the very first words and by the end of the first chapter I was in deep. I felt an instant connection with Jase and Piper. They were made for each other. This story is pretty much perfection.

Jase has recently gotten out of prison, where he was for 7 years. He is the ultimate bad boy and always has been. However, there is more to him than that bad boy image. Piper has loved Jase since the moment she met him when she was just 14 years old. Shy, self conscious, and lonely, he treated her like a person. See, she is best friends with Jase's younger sister. He felt a connection at their first meeting, a connection to continues to strengthen, but he ignored it because of her young age and who she is.

Jase grew up on the wrong side of the tracks; Piper has had a "privileged" upbringing. Her parents expect her to marry a man from their inner circle and be a housewife. She finally stands her ground and moves out. Theirs is not the life she wants for herself. When her act of rebellion takes a downward turn, she finds herself working for Jase and living in his house.

Before, I said that this story is pretty much perfect. However, you'll notice that I gave the book 4.5 Hearts instead of 5. I really wanted to give it a 5, but the conflict just seemed to be resolved too quickly. Honestly, I don't know how the author could have dragged it out. I mean, the resolution makes perfect sense, so I don't know, maybe I just wanted more of Jase and Piper and wasn't quite ready to let them go. I just absolutely adored them.
