Cover Reveal: Of River and Raynn: The Catalyst

They found me when I was five; a little girl sitting on a bench in Grand Central Station, soaking wet, asking about the rain.

I remembered nothing about how I got there, or who my parents were. I couldn’t even remember my name. I was tagged, labeled and doomed to cycle through state care for the next twelve years; moving from one family to another. They all rejected me as the dreams began to come, the memories began to return, and things around me began to explode.

Now my mind is full of a world of shadows, things that my heart pleads with me to be true, that I hope are only fantasy. That the disturbing past I see is not mine.

When I sleep I hear whispers of magic, and of evil queens, and a world that exists alongside our own. Things that could never be. But, there is one thing I know to be true. That there was a boy who was torn from me. A boy that I know means more to me than a brother, or than a lover. But what he is to me, I am not sure. I hear him cry for me in my dreams, I hear people call him The Catalyst.

I know I need to find him.

I wouldn’t have tried, if I would have known that finding River, would have made all my dreams turn into a haunting reality.

Blog Tour: Locks: Rapunzel Unhinged by Sarah J. Pepper

Gunned down by the hottest killer in the history of the Badass Archives wasn’t exactly Rapunzel’s end-game. But when her reputable extraction skills fail, she uses unorthodox methods to gain her freedom from the Mercenary, whose icy blue eyes have serious panty-dropping capabilities. Even though most girls wouldn’t fall for their would-be assassin, Rapunzel isn’t like most dames. Her major girl-boner for the Mercenary is so pathetically intense it verges on clichĂ©.

Regardless, Rapunzel’s hands are tied. Love chooses its victims, not the other way around. She isn’t the stereotypical Damsel in Distress. Her Bad-Boy Prince Charming is a renowned mercenary, and her “Happy Ending” plays out like a bad movie. However, she is determined to find her freedom—love be damned—and she’ll do it in a fabulous pair of heels.

Locks is a retelling of the story of Rapunzel. However, this story is anything but tame. It is jacked up with darkness, magic, betrayal, and love. This is definitely not a Disney movie!

Rapunzel (Zel) is locked away in the Spire tower by the Master of Time sorceress, Taryn. Only when Tayrn needs a hit of Zel's healing magic does she visit her.  She is tired of being locked up, so she escapes the tower, only to be caught by the Mercenary, also known as Flynn. Flynn works for Taryn, or so it seems on the surface, so back to the tower Rapunzel goes.

She is once again locked away and chained in her tower, but unknowingly becomes the face and voice of a rebellion. Rapunzel is defiant. She is does not willingly give the Master what's she wants and fights her every step of the way. Flynn teaches her how to fight and think in sticky situations. You see, he is also part of the rebellion. He wants Taryn dead, but works for her so he can get her trust and inside information. Rapunzel isn't the only person with a special power that Taryn has enslaved, tortured, and used, there are hundreds more.

If you are looking for something a little different, I highly recommend that you pick up a book by Sarah J. Pepper. Her writing is so clever, and she has a knack for taking well known characters and making them her own. They are witty, charming, a bit off center, and very original. She is truly a talented author.

Flynn was a lot of things—an excellent henchmen, a loyal subject, and a man’s man. Yet, he was so much more than job descriptions, even if he didn’t believe it himself. He was about more than vengeance. He couldn’t have been entirely emotionless.

“If I asked you to kill me, would you do it?” I asked, testing my theory.

The ferocity in his gaze could not be replicated by the most cruel bĂȘte noire in known existence. Gazing into his eyes was like catching a glimpse of his soul. Flynn wasn’t perfect, even though my eyes begged to differ. He was corrupt and had been ruined God-knew-how-many lifetimes with his vehemence.

“Taryn wouldn’t have a way to rejuvenate herself, unless she found another theurgist,” he said. “She manipulates time, but the more sorcery she uses, the more it takes a toll on her.”

“Ironic, isn’t it?”

As much as I fought my feelings for him, I couldn’t deny I wanted him in every way I could get. I couldn’t predict how long I’d live, but I refused to be blindsided by death. I would face it straight on. I reached around to grab his Glock. He was faster, so much faster than me. In a blink of an eye, he had the weapon aimed at my chest. If this was going to be the end, I’d embrace it so I stepped so close to him that the barrel grazed my shirt.

“One bullet will solve all your problems,” I said.

I specialize in dark, paranormal romance – think “happy ever after” but with a twisted, dark chocolate center. Real-life romance isn’t only filled with hugs, kisses, unicorns, and rainbows. True-love can be more thoroughly described in times of darkness and tribulation. It’s in those harsh moments where you see what a person is truly capable of – both the good and bad. Sometimes prince-charming isn’t always on time, and the glass slipper is a little snug. However, it doesn’t mean Charming is not Mr. Right, and who says every shoe is the perfect fit?

Interactive World: Of River and Raynn by Rebecca Ethington

I saw him in my dreams again last night—I saw them all. I saw River. I saw that boy who always dresses in black, the one who follows me around. And I saw Kadri, the young man who is so much older than I am. They were all there. And for once, I was excited to see them all.

I sat with the older boy, Kadri, while he read his book, a deep red glow coming in through the window and casting everything in shades of rose. The quiet boy, whose name I don’t know, stood next to the door, guarding—always guarding. Kadri was patient, saying something in a language I didn’t understand, his mouth moving so fast I knew I wouldn’t be able to understand him even if I knew what language he was speaking, even if I could’ve heard him.

I think that was what made the dream frightening at first. That, even though everything about the dream was calm, I couldn’t hear anything except static as it rumbled in my ears, vibrating my bones. It wasn’t just the sound, though. Something about the way everyone moved; their movements quick and jerky. It was like they were stuck on fast forward.

I watched as Kadri read from his book, his mouth moving fast as his hands twitched and gestured at a rate much faster than normal. The quiet boy stood still at his post by the door, and even though he didn’t move, something was still off. I stared at him, his posture still as he kept his focus away from me, his eyes hard as they stared straight ahead.

The static seemed to grow as I watched him, the buzz in my ears rising as I took a step closer, the burn under my skin mounting, mounting.

“Stay.” The voice was high and feminine.

I jumped, the icy strains pulling my focus, freezing through me in white fear.

I turned on instinct, expecting to see her towering frame, the same one that always haunts my dreams. Instead, it was only River. I saw the beautiful color of his mismatched eyes. Everything in me loosened as I saw him standing there, not the adult River that I sometimes saw, but the boy that I’d known, the brother that had been torn from me after only a few short months of being together. Right then, which River was inside the dream didn’t matter. Because he was here, laughing and smiling.

For a moment, he looked at me and everything in the dream slowed down. His smile spread wide over his lips, his eyes looked into mine, and then he looked away, and with the break in focus, the whole dream sped up again, everything moving at hyper speed. It all played out like someone watching a movie on fast forward with the sound down. It should have been funny, yet it was anything but.

It wasn’t funny when the door to the room we all sat in swung wide, the old hinges breaking through the static and pulling my focus. The wooden door was old and slatted with thick, oiled planks, making it look archaic and forgotten, much like the grey stone wall of the room and the massive four poster bed, or the clothes that Kadri wore.

I stared at the door while the quiet boy who stood beside it twitched and jerked in the sped up motions. Funny. I tried to convince myself, but it didn’t take, not when River walked through the door, his towering frame that of the adult I feared, not of the boy who stood beside me.

He towered over me as he came up beside me, his dark eyes digging into mine. But it wasn’t the depth of his eyes that scared me, it was the streaks of blood on his hands and face. It was the way his lip curled as he asked me the question I had been taught to fear.

“What am I?” His voice was deep as it ran through me, his eyes flashing as the smile on his face straightened into a look of hard desperation.

He asked the same question every time and every time I knew the answer, the answer I would never say.

The Catalyst.

“Say it,” he hissed.

“Never.” My voice got lost in my throat as he moved closer. My heart pounded in my chest as the fire that always lived under my skin burned, begging me to move closer to him, pulling me toward him.

“I need to find you, Raynn,” he pleaded, the darkness in his voice drowning out his desperation. “Say it. What am I to you?”
Catalyst.

Requisite.

Sypher.

Words. People. They all haunted my dream, but I would never answer.

I would never say the words.

Not in the dreams, not in reality. The word he wanted me to say would stay trapped in my throat, even after I woke in a cold sweat, the terrifying face of the lady in white imprinted in my mind’s eye.

I think that was why I came here, running from the stench of the apartment the moment I woke up. I ran through the streets and the brightly lit subways until I reached the echoing halls of Grand Central. I came here to try to escape the nightmares.
Even though the sky is still dark outside, this is what draws me. Now that everything familiar is gone, this is the only place I have left. I don’t think I have come here so often in years, but right now, this is what calms me and makes the dreams seem a little less frightening.

I stay still as I lean against the wall I have curled into, the soft classical music buzzing in my ears as I watch the stragglers walk by.

Even though the image of River is still burned in my mind, still makes my heart thump with fear, I continue to look for him. I still scan the faces of the straggling people as if he would be among them.

I know he won’t because that River only exists in my dreams.

At least, that’s what I keep forcing myself to believe, no matter what River had said to me when we were kids.

The Grimm Diaries Prequels by Cameron Jace Spotlight and Review

What if all you knew about fairy tales was wrong?

Warning: these Grimm Prequels are like snap shots of a magical land you're about to visit soon. I like to think of them as poisoned apples. Once you taste them, you will never see fairy tales in the same light again.
This Grimm Diaries Prequels are a number of short books in the form of epistolary diary entries. The diaries are more of teasers for the upcoming series: The Grimm Diaries, allowing you to get a glimpse of what to expect of the series. The 6 diaries are told by The Evil Queen, Peter Pan, Little Red Riding Hood, the Devil, Prince Charming, and Alice Grimm
The first book in the Series will be out soon, called SNOW WHITE SORROW.

Series Description:
The Grimm Diaries are pages written in a Book of Sand, where each fairy tale character confessed the true stories once altered by the Brothers Grimm two centuries ago. To keep the truth about fairy tales hidden, the Brothers Grimm buried the characters in their dreams to never wake up again. But the curse is broken now, and the characters are allowed to wake up every one hundred years. They intend to tell the truth about really happened, and about an untold cosmic conflict between fairy tale characters.

The Grimm Diaries Prequels is an introduction to the Grimm Diaries series. I understand that this is only a preview of what us to come, I mean that is what a prequel is.

That being said, I had a difficult time getting into each story. Each novella is told by a new character. I think the quick switching between the characters and stories is what made it difficult for me. However, I am intrigued by the spin the author has on a lot of these well known fairy tales. It is definitely creative.

Just because I didn't fully enjoy this set of prequels and give it a higher rating doesn't mean I won't be reading the full length novels. I will. I know that once I do read the novels, these novellas will make more sense and I will be glad for them.

Review: Soul of Flame by Rebecca Ethington

The Time for the final battle has come.
Edmund's armies have surrounded the Rioseco Abbey, trapping the few survivors inside. The sight that Ilyan was given a thousand years ago is about to come to pass.

If only Joclyn was able to fight.

Joclyn is tormented by the hallucinations that Cail’s mind has left her with, her magic an uncontrollable torrent that even Ilyan cannot control. Her moments of lucidity are broken by fears of dripping pipes and bleeding walls, and a desire to kill Ryland that she is having trouble trying to ignore.

The sight has shown her power, shown her success, but it has also shown her death – The end of her life something she is not quite willing to give up on yet.

Even past her death, the sight has shown her love, and that love may be the only key to her sanity, to her strength, and to Edmund's death.
That love may stand in her way, and a single choice may tip the scales and secure their future, or destroy their fate.

The Imdalind series keeps getting better and better. This is a series that I can read over and over again and not get bored. You MUST read this series in order, otherwise you will be lost. If you haven’t read the first 3 books, you will want to stop reading this review. It will contain spoilers to them.

The author again pulls us into the magical world of Jos, Ilyan, Ryland, and the whole cast of wonderful characters as they plot how to save the world from Edmund. Jos has just been pulled from Cail’s mind in this book. She is broken, afraid, and plagued by hallucinations. This is her story of healing. She begins to really believe in herself and her abilities. She really grew as a character and I loved her journey.

This is also her and Ilyan’s love story. Yes, she has been falling in love with him during the previous books, and he has always loved her, but this is the story where she really embraces that love. Like all relationships, theirs isn’t full of flowers and sunshine. They have issues that they need to overcome, not to mention the upcoming battle and her death. Like all great couple, they stick together and know that they can face what lies ahead as long as they have each other.

In this book, we also get a better understanding of Ryland. I won’t lie; I have a soft spot for him. I fell in love with him in Kiss of Fire, and my heart hasn’t yet let him go. I hate that Edmund tore his soul apart. My heart breaks for him. I want him to become fully healed and whole so he won’t be insane and try to kill Jos every time he sees her. He was such a great guy and I believe that he still has it in him. I was thrilled to see some moments of his old self in this book.

I was introduced to Rebecca Ethington’s writing with her debut novel, Kiss of Fire. From there, she has grown and matured into an exceptional writer. Her use of imagery is outstanding. I can picture everything she describes so clearly. She also knows how to coax out all of your emotions and really get you invested in her stories. Rebecca is definitely one of my favorite authors, and I will willingly devour each and every story she has to tell.
