He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker

Title: He Will Be My Ruin
Author: K.A. Tucker

On the surface, Celine Gonzalez had everything a twenty-eight-year-old woman could want: a one-bedroom apartment on Manhattan's Lower East Side, a job that (mostly) paid the bills, and an acceptance letter to the prestigious Hollingsworth Institute of Art, where she would finally live out her dream of becoming an antiques appraiser for a major auction house. All she had worked so hard to achieve was finally within her reach. So why would she kill herself?

A man who was supposed to be her salvation...

Maggie Sparks arrives in New York City to pack up what's left of her best friend's belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a lethal cocktail of pills and vodka, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers a scandalous photograph in a lock box hidden in Celine's apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine believed would change her life.

Until he became her ruin.

On the hunt for evidence that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine's private life--and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer. A killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

There is so much I want to gush about when it comes to K.A. Tucker. She is a writer whose talent is in a realm of it's own. I have read each of her works countless times and regardless of their familiarity, every reread still takes me on an emotional journey. When He Will Be My Ruin came to light, I was giddy with anticipation. This novel is unlike anything Tucker has written before, but shines with the same high caliber as her other stories.

It's really hard for me to write this review. Not because the story wasn't incredible, but because everything I want to say might spoil the story for a reader. He Will Be My Ruin will consume you from the first page until the very end. It pained me to have to put this novel down and flooded my thoughts until I could resume reading. The suspense and twists are nothing I could have ever anticipated. This story truly kept me guessing and kept my heart racing. I loved every anxious moment. The characters, the plot, the words all come together in a remarkably written package that is uniquely phenomenal. I was intrigued and ultimately fell in love with this genre that I had only scratched the surface of before He Will Be My Ruin. Tucker stepped outside of where she has found success before to pen a story that flexed her creative muscles and showed her range as a writer.

I commend her for taking a risk on a story that will bring readers nothing but reward. If you're a fan of Tucker's books, He Will Be My Ruin will find a place on your shelf of favorites. For those who have not discovered this gem of an author--what are you waiting for!? He Will Be My Ruin is an Adult Suspense that will leave you stunned but satisfied, so pick up your copy today!

Look, I’m just…” I stare at my reflection in the mirror, my eyes lined with bags, my skin sallow, my hair matted. I look like someone who sat in bed for twenty-four hours, eating cold pizza from the box I had delivered last night and polishing off a bottle of vodka, all while reading the deepest and darkest thoughts from the last fifteen years of Celine Gonzalez’s life. Discovering things that I could have happily gone the rest of my life without knowing.
Which is exactly what I’ve done.
I can barely keep my eyes open and yet I know that sleep will not grant me a reprieve. “I’m dealing with a few private matters.”
“Well, I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to fit you in when you decide that you’re ready.”
“You will, because your boss wants my money.” I hang up before I hear her snippy answer and stare at the journal in my hands.
I was torn between starting from the latest diary first and easing myself in with the oldest one, afraid that I wasn’t ready for what might lie within those last pages. That I wasn’t ready to witness just how Celine had lost herself.
And then I picked up a pink book with butterflies on it—the earliest dated journal—and read a thirteen-year-old Celine recount her major crush on my boyfriend at the time: a tall, gangly guy named Jordan who kissed her behind our house one day while I was changing into my bathing suit upstairs. She felt so guilty, she couldn’t sleep for a week. Through tears, I laughed—because I hadn’t even given that guy a moment’s thought in years—and I knew then that starting at the beginning of Celine’s story was the only way to do this.
And so I did, living the past fifteen years through Celine’s eyes, since the days she and Rosa still lived with me. It wasn’t hard to follow along. She dated every single entry. Some days she didn’t have a lot to say. Other days she’d fill an entire page, even writing along the margin. She seemed to follow a simple rule as the years progressed: one page per day, no more.
So many days.
So many confessions.
So many things that made my heart swell.
And so many that made my heart bleed with pain.

Born in small-town Ontario, K.A. Tucker published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons. She currently resides in a quaint town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.

Blog Tour: Shadows & Lies by Eden Butler

One lie can change your life.

A web of lies can destroy it.

Neil Ryan was a good Navy SEAL. He was an even better detective, but when an unmarked envelope lands on his desk, long-buried secrets are resurrected and Ryan questions everything he thought he knew about justice, including who killed his mother.

Alex Black is a distraction Ryan doesn’t need—she’s loud, obnoxious and a common thief, but her eyes are haunting, her lips irresistible and Ryan happens to love her filthy mouth.

Alex is also the only one able to help Ryan find the leads he's missing. She's the only one who can lead him to the one person who has the answers he seeks, but following her could cost Ryan everything.

Secrets get told, lives get wrecked and in every shadow, the truth is hiding.

Eden Butler is one of my favorite authors. Everytime I see her name attached to a new book, I'm all over it. There is something about her writing, her tone, her "voice," whatever you want to call it, that always pulls me in. This book is no different. Well, it is different than her other books, but it is still very, very good. I was so excited that the author decided to branch out and try something new. I think it paid off. Big time.

Alex is flawed. She isn't perfect. Didn't have a perfect childhood. In fact, she is a criminal. She hustles and steals for her living. She is tough, independent, and street smart. She does have redeeming qualities, though, that make her likable. Really, I enjoyed all her qualities when she wasn't hustling. As far as characters go, she is definitely in my top 5 so far this year.

Ryan is a the good guy. A former cop and Navy Seal he now runs a security film in New Orleans. He and Alex share some unpleasant history from back in his hometown of Cavanaugh. (I love this touch. If you've read the author's other books, you'll get it.) they discover a further link that had then teaming up and relying on each other.

I devoured this story. It was suspenseful, a little gritty, and full of action. If you are looking for a steamy, erotic story, this isn't the book for you. It does contain romance and some heat, but that isn't the focus of the story. Personally, I'm fine with less sex and more story, and that is definitely what the author gives. There isn't one dull moment in this story. There is not a cliffhanger, but the story is far from over. I cannot wait to find out what happens next!

“I’ve never seen you cruel before. Didn’t know you had it in you, Boy Scout.”

“You know, lady,” there was a hum in my voiceI didn’t recognize. Alex had put it there with just the low dip of her gaze, “you got all these ideas that you know me. You don’t.”

“Ditto.”

Her eyes moved with the shake of my head, following the slow nod, the moment becoming something tactile, obvious as the heating air between our bodies that dampened our skin. Two looks, two held breaths and something had shifted. Hell, who was I kidding? It had started, brewing, way back, the second I grabbed her arm, stopping her from taking that wallet. It simmered when she snuck onto my balcony asking for my help. Now it crackled—that attraction, the symmetry in the breath that mingled between her mouth and mine.

“Alex?” It was only her name falling from my mouth that moved her gaze off my lips, a small glance that was all the answer she’d give me. “I’m not a fucking Boy Scout.”

There are times when you can’t think. Those are the clustered moments when the energy, the zing of the moment you’re in breaks apart any awareness you have. There is no logic in the swell of sensation or the liquid heat that drives one body closer to another. It’s the feel of warmth, the hope of touch that pulls you in no matter what your brain tries to make you understand about right and wrong, friend or foe. I wasn’t supposed to touch Alex Black. I wasn’t supposed to see her as anything but a mission. I was supposed to find her stalkerand keep her safe.

But I had always done what was expected. Seems she had to, as well. The difference was that my expectations fell on the side of justice. Hers ran along the tracks of corruption. Both meant we survived however we could.

I didn’t think about the case or what had brought her to me in the first place, and what kept her coming back to me. I reached for her because Iknew that’s what we both wanted. I touched her because she let me and once I had her against my chest, felt the smooth brush of her fingers on my neck, sensation shattered judgment.

The last sound I heard before I kissed her was the strangle of laughter falling into a moan. Hers, not mine. Alex was a woman—beautiful, sensual, parts that went in and out just like they’re supposed to, but she did not kiss me like any other hesitant, docile woman I’d ever touched.

She touched me like she was still hungry, like the meal we had just shared had not filled her. Like nothing would.

Alex felt like spin sugar—sweet, tangy and if you had too much, you’d walk away lightheaded. At that moment, I didn’t care. She came in my arms easy enough, her small body fussing to mine like her legs belonged around my waist, like her breasts should always be right against my ribs. Her tongue was strong, delicious and when I gripped her ass, falling back against the island, that strong muscle vibrated against my mouth, shaking in the groan, the wild growl of her voice.

My head burned from the sensation of her mouth along my neck, how she moved her hips, ground them against my aching dick like she wanted to free it, and I didn’t stop her, couldn’t when she held my face, devoured every damn inch of my mouth, my tongue like she owned it. Like she always would.
