ADD TO GOODREADS
As always, Trudy Stiles has written a charming book filled with great characters and a memorable storyline. She definitely doesn't hold back when including difficult subject matter into her stories. The story centers around a neonatal nurse, a rock star, and one little baby suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. NAS is a syndrome that newborn babies are forced to endure when their birth mother has introduced drugs into their system when they are in the womb.
Kai is the baby suffering through Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. You feel his anguish and pain as the author writes about his high pitch screaming cries. It just tore at my heart. Garrett is Kai's unknowing father. He is thrust into the world of fatherhood when one of his groupies busts into his tour bus and surprisingly and dramatically leaves him the proof. He is desperate to escape his new reality, so, with the help of his housekeeper, he finds Sam, a neonatal nurse, to help take care of Kai. Sam falls in love with Kai right away, but is very disappointed with Garrett who does not want anything to do with his baby.
As reality sets in for Garrett (and with the help of Sam), his heart opens up to his sick son. As the pair get to know each other, it becomes apparent that they are unwilling to talk about their own, separate tragic pasts. It's up to them to decide if their unconventional little family is worth rehashing the past or if they will let it come between them.
The author's writing style makes it easy for me to get sucked into her books every time and Epic Sins is no different. The flow, the tone, everything invites the reader to get comfortable and lost in the story. I absolutely adored Garrett. At first, he seemed selfish, if not terrified of his new situation, but not so much that I couldn't relate to him. His reaction and fear was totally understandable. Sam is a great counterpart for Garrett. She is unshakable, strong, and caring. She does not mind putting Garrett in his place when it comes to baby Kai.
This story is told in the present with flashes of the past for both Sam and Garrett. I do understand the need for glimpses into their past. It makes them into the characters they are and it is so vital to the story that we grasp them and what they went through. However, there were a few scenes that I felt I could have done without. As a certain point in the story, I was done learning about them and just wanted what was happening in the present. As such, I felt that some of the current things in the story were rushed. As a whole, Epic Sins is an awesome story, It is a great start to what I undoubtedly think will be an amazing series.
