Schizoaffective disorder: a mental illness in which a person experiences a combination of mood disorder and schizophrenia symptoms.
I know about this illness—very well—because I suffer from it. It’s been four years since my diagnosis, and ever since, I’ve been living in a dark hole. Voices constantly invading my thoughts. Hallucinations. All of which force me to question if what I’m experiencing is even reality.
But here I am, still hanging on, still breathing and living through it.
That is, until he stumbled into my life. Logan Reed. I don’t want any part of him. I’ve pushed him away, but he isn’t easily deterred. I’ve told him I’m different, but he doesn’t care. He’s trying to slowly break me down. I’m trying just as hard not to let him. He doesn’t know how truly damaged I am; what will happen when he does?
I know the truth—he’ll never be able to look at me the same way again. Just like everybody else.

I was absolutely blown away by E.L. Montes’ Perfectly Damaged. This novel is nothing short of incredible and is a five star must read for 2014.

Jenna suffers from Schizoaffective disorder. While I was not familiar with this disorder, I felt like the author did her research and constructed a character that was loveable and relatable even if I couldn’t empathize with her personal struggles. I loved her wit, her vulnerability, and my heart shattered for her as she fought to live beyond the confines of her mental illness. She faced many challenges; one of the most difficult was the judgment from her mother. It has been a long time since a character has come along in a novel that I have loathed as much as I did Jenna’s mother. There isn’t a redeemable quality in this woman, and she is truly evil.

Logan Reed is everything a book boyfriend should be. Despite his haunted past and sordid reputation, he sees the goodness in Jenna and wholeheartedly wants nothing but the best for her – no matter the cost or sacrifice it may entail. She revives qualities in his character that were lost long ago. He is patient, supportive, and undeniably sexy. His devotion to Jenna left me in awe. Their chemistry and relationship dynamic is playful yet intense. I loved watching the twosome grow and make each other better people.

I read along as Jenna worked toward normalcy and did her best to keep her disorder under control. I was captivated from the beginning and immersed in her story. I could feel the events building to something truly heartbreaking, but I had no idea what the devastation would be. Nothing could have prepared me for the shocking twist embedded in this novel.  I feel as if E.L. Montes has stolen a piece of my soul. Utter destruction doesn’t come close to describing how my heart felt when all of the pieces to this puzzle were laid out. I had to walk away and compose myself and honestly was afraid to return to my e-reader to finish out the story. You’ve been warned so prepare yourself with tissues and a sedative.

If you are itching for a serious book hangover, then you must one-click Perfectly Damaged by E.L. Montes. You’ll be engrossed in this literary rollercoaster from page one to the end and you’ll love every moment of this emotionally shattering read.

“When the Japanese mend broken objects, they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. The believe that when something’s suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful.” – Barbara Bloom
I love that quote. It really is true to this story. E.L. Montes gave us a really unique and special main character, Jenna.  I instantly fell in love with her. I wanted to put her in my pocket and carry her around so I can protect her. Jenna has schizoaffective disorder. She hears voices in her head and sometimes she even hallucinates. Couple that with a deep depression and she sometimes doesn’t want to leave her room for days. Her best friend, Charlie is there for her and brings her out of her dark places. Brooke really plays such a great role in this story too. She was Jenna’s sister’s best friend before she passed away. Jenna’s sister , Brooke was fiercely protective and supportive of Jenna since their mother is a beast and their father works to much. After Brooke’s death, Jenna’s parents got worse.
Jenna is going through life hiding from the world. One day she meets Logan after he saves her life. Logan is a construction worker assigned to work on the guest house Jenna’s mother is building. Logan is absolutely swoon worthy. Even though he didn’t know what made Jenna so special at first, he knew that she was.
This story is truly beautiful. E.L. Montes brought us a book like no other and handled the explanation of the illness brilliantly. I really connected with these characters and she made the book real for me. I really hope we get more of Logan and Jenna in the future. There is no cliffhanger but I wanted more because the characters really stuck with me.
